METHODOLOGY for Casting Solutions

Casting Defect Analysis- Protocol

This protocol applies to castings that contain defects

  1. Visual Observation of Casting Defect
    • This is best done by actual observation of the casting, but Photos, in some cases may suffice
  2. Determination of Casting Features,  including
    • Alloy type, actual chemistry is preferable
    • Melting type
    • Actual pouring temperatures and times
    • Pouring method
    • In-gate locations, and sizes
    • Riser locations, types and sizes
    • Locations of chills
    • Location and size of chills
    • Parting Lines
    • Mold and Core Material
  3. If Casting is Scrapped
    • Remove Section from casting preferably by mechanical methods to avoid affecting microstructure
  4. If Casting is to be Salvaged
    • Use Portable Microscope to view defect and characterize defect
    • If defect is non-metallic, attempt to scrape some particles for observation in the lab
    • Drill small holes to analyze chemistry near the defect.
