METHODOLOGY for Casting Solutions
|
Casting Defect Analysis- Protocol
This protocol applies to castings that contain defects
- Visual Observation of Casting Defect
- This is best done by actual observation of the casting, but Photos, in some cases may suffice
- Determination of Casting Features, including
- Alloy type, actual chemistry is preferable
- Melting type
- Actual pouring temperatures and times
- Pouring method
- In-gate locations, and sizes
- Riser locations, types and sizes
- Locations of chills
- Location and size of chills
- Parting Lines
- Mold and Core Material
- If Casting is Scrapped
- Remove Section from casting preferably by mechanical methods to avoid affecting microstructure
- If Casting is to be Salvaged
- Use Portable Microscope to view defect and characterize defect
- If defect is non-metallic, attempt to scrape some particles for observation in the lab
- Drill small holes to analyze chemistry near the defect.
