Foundries are not created equally. Some foundries have tremendous expertise and sophisticated level of technology but this does not guarantee that they are able to make a particular casting without quality issues. Conversely, a less technologically advanced foundry may be able to produce high quality castings if they are within their niche.
CMPT are knowledgeable of many foundries in the USA (and also in other countries) and understand castings that fit their level of technology. Therefore, CMPT are able to help casting buyers in the selection of appropriate foundries for their casting needs. Since foundries are dynamic with ever changing processes, personnel and capabiilties, CMPT suggest to perform a foundry evaluation prior to securing an order with the appropriate foundry and prior to manufacturing the casting to ensure that critical to quality processes are properly controlled. A quality audit, although useful is not sufficient. A review of manufacturing procedures, existing casting quality, non-destructive testing results and mechanical property results is required to ensure that the foundry supplier has the technology, capability and expectation to produce high quality castings.
CMPT uses a rigorous template to evalaute potential suppliers which includes the major manufacturing and quality control assessments coupled with a factor weighting system for each score of the assessments to give a final report of Strengths, Weaknesses (pertaining to the manufacture of the particular casting type) and Risk Assessment of the supplier making castings.
